Running Ball Classes: Notes for Teachers

Floor spacing, hygiene, sizing a mixed room, and how to sequence a class where everyone is on a different diameter.

A studio floor arranged with stability balls spaced for a class

A ball class is a logistics problem before it is a movement problem. Get the room right and the sequencing takes care of itself.

Floor spacing

Balls roll. Allow a 2m square per person, not the 1.5m you would use for mats, and leave a clear metre against every wall — wall squats need it and a loose ball needs somewhere to go that is not someone's head.

Sizing a mixed room

  • Stock 55, 65 and 75cm in roughly a 2:5:3 ratio
  • Size people at the door, not once the class starts
  • Keep two spares inflated — a plug always goes missing

Hygiene

Mild soap solution between classes, not alcohol spray. Alcohol dries the shell and within a term you will have a rack of chalky, slippery balls. Air dry rather than towelling, which drags grit across the texture.
